THE WHY AND HOW OF OUR FEEDING PROGRAM

We have been feeding our Newfs a wholesome raw foods diet since 1983. We have proven to ourselves that this is a far superior way of feeding than the processed food diets that have become so commonplace. What we have been seeing are healthy dogs, dogs without the diseases that plague kibble fed dogs. Our dogs don?t have joint disease, allergies, skin problems, ear infections, hot spots etc. Our dogs have luxurious coats and enjoy excellent health. They have strong bones and gleaming white teeth. They seem to glow with good health.

Eating raw is nature?s first law. Every animal on the planet does it, with the exception of man and his domesticated animals. It is clear that animals in the wild do not suffer what have become common diseases of mankind and his animals, i.e. cancer, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes etc. We are beginning to understand that diet may be causing these problems in man, but what are we doing to our pets that we don?t understand? The answer is very simple; it too is what we are feeding them: overcooked, preserved foods that have been stripped of any nutritional value. By nature dogs are carnivores; how is it possible to feed them a prepackaged, over cooked, over preserved ration with no vital life force and expect them to be healthy? Dogs fed habitually on cooked diets are host to parasites, failing of kidneys and eyesight as well as hearing. They often have an unpleasant body odor and bad breath from the filth brown tartar deposits on their teeth. They also have a tendency to mature too quickly putting extra stress on their systems which will cause joint disease and premature aging.

It is vile and disgusting what is put into pet foods, and the public hasn?t a clue. It is no wonder that our pets are sick. There is so much information on the internet about the true nature of pet food, I won?t go into it here, but just to say that most pet food is a mix of ingredients that are not fit for human consumption. A book that tells all about what's in prepackaged pet foods is, Foods Pet Die For, written by Anne Martin.

Why raw? First and foremost the dog is a meat eater. Its entire body is adapted for a meat diet, from the teeth fashioned for tearing and crushing, the powerful jawbones and muscles, the very small muscular stomach and the short intestinal tract. Above all the powerful digestive juices, both in the mouth and in the stomach are strongly antiseptic, therefore raw animal flesh can be eaten with out harmful effects. Cooked foods can not create true health because they are missing some vital elements needed by the body for optimal functioning. Things like enzymes and life-force. When foods are heated they begin to lose these. Vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, proteins and fats are still there, but in a greatly altered state. Eating cooked foods prevents the immune system from working on what is really important in keeping our pets healthy. The body?s strength is exhausted and dissipated by using the immune system to combat the unnatural cooked foods, chemically based supplements, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and numerous other toxins they ingest from processed foods. Eating healthy means giving the body power foods it can easily assimilate and use for regeneration and rejuvenation. Life comes from life.

So what's our Springhaven feeding program? Our Newf?s diet consists of cereal grains, vegetables, fruits, supplements plus raw meat. Chicken is our main source of meat; we use necks, backs and leg meat. We also use some turkey and lamb in addition to organ meat. We make our food fresh everyday. It is a lot of work, but our dog?s health is well worth the time it takes! Our Newfs are fed twice a day, a cereal meal in the morning with occasional fruit or egg, flax oil and additions such as Vitamin C and E. Then an evening meal of raw meat, that includes herbs and green veggies. All adults are fasted one day a week to rest the digestion, which is important when feeding a raw meat diet.

We feel so strongly about how we feed that we are now recommending our puppy buyers try to continue with a raw feeding program for the first year when possible. There are several frozen, raw food products on the market for the owners that don?t have time to do it themselves. For those that do have the time and inclination we recommend the book The BARF Diet, available at www.barfworld.com. It has an easy to follow ?recipe? with portion recommendations. It is thorough and easily understood. If you decide to give BARF a try, be sure to take the time to acquaint yourself with the diet, as an unbalanced diet can do much harm to a growing puppy. Don?t take short cuts, do it right or not at all.

Keep in mind that no matter how outstanding a diet, this alone is not enough. If at all possible, dogs should be allowed a minimum of two hours free exercise time off lead in a safe environment. Please be aware that walking on a leash is not a substitute for free running exercise.
